BioProtect Ltd.
Core Business/Technology
BioProtect Ltd has developed the first biodegradable, inflatable and
implantable balloon which can be inserted under minimally invasive
outpatient conditions. With an infinite number of sizes and shapes
possible, in addition to serving as an advanced spacemaker/tissue
dissector device it can be used specifically to enhance radiation
therapy for cancer by both reducing session frequency and improving
patient safety.
Main Markets/ Applications
One major application will be to dramatically improve the safety and
efficacy of radiation therapy in prostate, uterine, bladder ad other
pelvic cancers. 250,000 new prostate cancers require radiation therapy
annually alone. The device creates additional physical distance between
tumors and adjacent, healthy tissue. This allows for radiation
“escalation therapy” whereby the radiation dose per session is increased
while damage to healthy tissue is reduced. The device can be used with
all external beam radiation therapy techniques (including IMRT, IGRT)
and brachytherapy (radioactive seed implants).
Uniqueness/Advantages over Existing Products
This device complements new technological methods being adopted for dose
escalation and patient safety. Other devices (e.g. rectal balloons) used
to reduce tissue damage are limited in effect, cause patient discomfort,
and require separate procedures to remove. The BioProtect device seeks
to improve patient safety under all current radiation therapy procedures
for targeted cancers, reduce the number of required sessions (saving
money), reduce wait times for the therapy (increase throughput), and
support radiation oncology trends which favor dose escalation.
BioProtect seeks to change the standard of care towards safer and more
effective technique sought by clinicians.
