R & D Supports
Core Business / Technology
R & D Supports designs and manufactures unique orthopedic braces. Nylon
material coated with polyurethane is cut to a certain shape containing a
network of inflatable tubes welded by high frequency. When inflated, and
with aid of Velcro straps, a cradle shape fitting the limb is created.
Final application to the limb is by Velcro straps passing from side to
side, and stiffness is monitored by increasing or decreasing the
inflation.
Main Markets / Applications
The company has identified various unmet needs in the realm of
Orthopedic Braces. Our concepts are a continuation of Sarmijento &
Latta's "FUNCTIONAL BRACING", meaning bracing and supporting, but at the
same time allowing movement proximal and distal to the site of injury or
disease, thereby preserving function. The company has received the FDA
approval and the European CE mark for its flagship product, the
Universal Foot and Ankle Brace and all other limb applications.
Disposable variants of the presently manufactured braces are under
development. Apart from inflation technology, other technologies will be
introduced as required for various indications. For example for the
wrist we will use modular ultra-light plastic forms and unique
multi-directional joints and for our chest stabilizer elastic materials.
Markets include: Intensive care (5 million admissions yearly in US; 20%
of patients are given braces to prevent pressure sores on the heels and
feet and prevent heel cord contracture); fractured neck of femur
(250,000 annually in US); pre- and post- foot, ankle, leg, and knee
operations (over 1 million such operations are performed annually in
US).
Uniqueness / Advantage over Existing Products
R&D Supports products compete favorably with existing products in the
orthopedic brace market segments. Our braces have been developed to meet
the specific needs of the indications listed above. For example there
are no convenient braces available for pre- and post-operative support;
the clumsy work-intensive braces used today in intensive care cause
staff non-compliance; and the first aid braces currently in use take up
too much storage room in ambulances, helicopters, and back packs and
waste time. R & D Supports offers all the following advantages in one
solution: facilitation of faster healing; faster, easier and cleaner
application; radiographic translucency; deep absorption of jolting;
easily removable; lightweight, compact, requiring minimal storage space;
and increased staff compliance.
