There are approximately 36,600 employees in the life science industry in
San Diego County in more than 500 companies, including traditional
biotech, medical device, diagnostic and technology companies, with $8.5
billion of Annual Economic Impact and $860 million in 2004 Funding from
the National Institutes of Health. This is a good general indicator of
the raw scientific output of a region. The region has seen venture
capital investments in the sum of $710.2 million in 2005.
Orange County Orange County is a global
biomedical hub, with over 310 biomedical companies including a major
research university and the world largest cluster of medical device and
diagnostic companies. Over 1 billion dollars in total venture capital
has been invested in Orange County high growth companies in the past two
years alone. Many biomedical start ups and emerging companies spawned by
an influx of venture capital dollars.
Bay Area
More bioscience companies are located in Northern California than
anywhere else, with five major research universities and three medical
schools, more than 50% of all companies spun out from universities in
California have come from Bay Area institutions. They do it thanks to
the ready availability of venture capital. The Bay Area is now home to
34% of active US venture capital firms. The birthplace of
Biotechnology-Genentech, founded in 1976-has now some 820 Life Science
Companies with 85,000 employed in Bioscience Directly.
